Top Dressing, Overseeding, and Aeration of Lawns
Healthy turfgrass is an attractive feature of any home. The summer heat can be especially harsh on lawns and can possibly cause areas of your lawn to become sparse. Also, after weed removal, the same can occur leaving bare spots that require attention.
Top Dressing and Overseeding your lawn can help thicken your turfgrass in sparse areas. This procedure can be performed in spring or fall when seed grows best.
A mechanical core aeration is a good way to start this process. An aeration removes finger sized plugs of soil and thatch from your lawn. The removal of these plugs loosens and revives the soil allowing air, water and sunlight and vital nutrients to reach the root system more effectively. This means aeration strongly contributes to a healthier and deeper root system which gives your lawn a stronger stand against stress caused by insects, weeds and disease.
The holes left behind by the aerator create thousands of new entry points for grass seed to germinate, grow and thrive. The seeds will grow new grass plants deeper into the soil, which promotes and encourages a deep root system which is an essential component in developing and maintaining a health lawn.
After aeration seed is applied to your lawn followed by Top Dressing. Top Dressing is an organic soil which is kiln dried and has no weeds. This adds a protective layer to ensure that the new seed is not swept away from rainfall, watering, wind or eaten by local wildlife as well as, nourishing your soil.
During dry conditions you should give your lawn a light watering on a daily basis.
Healthy Lawn Benefits:
Healthy turfgrass acts like a sponge, pulling pollutants such as carbon dioxide, soot, dirt from the air. It then creates oxygen which is expelled back into the air we breathe.
You may have noticed in the summer that your lawn is cooler than the sidewalk or hot pavement. The front lawn of a home has the cooling effect of air conditioning.
A healthy lawn:
- generates large quantities of oxygen
- removes dioxides and harmful emissions from the air
- filters out groundwater pollutants
- reduces noise
- reduces ground temperature
- stabilizes soil by reducing erosion
- discourages weeds and insect infestations
